Tips: Travel with electronic ticket

What are e-tickets and why should I use them?

Electronic tickets, offered by most major airlines, allow you to travel without a paper ticket. The only record of an e-ticket sale is in electronic form in the airline’s computer system.

When you buy e-tickets on Expedia.ca, you’ll receive confirmation of your purchase via e-mail. The e-mail will include your itinerary information and confirmation numbers. You will not receive a paper confirmation, receipt or tickets. When you check in for your flight, give the ticket agent your name and flight number, or provide a printed copy of your itinerary along with government issued photo identification. Note that a valid passport is required for travel outside Canada.

An increasing number of airlines are offering e-tickets. Please be aware that e-tickets may not be available for all of the flights offered by a particular airline.

How do I travel with an e-ticket?

When you check in for your flight, give the ticket agent your name, flight number and valid passport or other government issued photo identification. Note that a valid passport is required for travel outside Canada. For your protection, some airlines also require that you show the credit card used to purchase your ticket.

Due to airline check-in and security requirements, you may be asked to present a printed copy of your e-ticket confirmation e-mail at check-in. Expedia.ca recommends that you print and bring a copy of your e-ticket confirmation with you to the airline check-in counter. To print a copy of your e-ticket confirmation:

  1. Go to www.expedia.ca.
  2. Choose the “My Trips” link at the top of the page. Sign in if necessary.
  3. Open the desired itinerary.
  4. Ensure that both the Airline ticket number(s) and the Airline confirmation code information is completed on your itinerary. If not, please check back in 24 hours and ensure that this information is complete before printing your e-ticket confirmation.
  5. Click “Print Version”in the “Trip Tool” box on the left side of the page.
  6. Print the itinerary.
  7. Click “Back to itinerary page”.
  8. You can print a receipt for business purposes by clicking “Print a receipt” next to the total amount charged for your flight.

Adults and children can travel using e-tickets. If there is no seat purchased for infants under 2 years old, no ticket will be issued for Domestic and Transborder flights. Taxes will still need to be paid at the airport. For International flights a paper ticket is always issued.
